The launch of 'Vivid Sydney', a festival of music, light and ideas, Sydney, Australia - 26 May 2009
Legendary musician, producer and artist Brian Eno has lent his visionary genius to light up the iconic Sydney Opera House. Last night (May 25) onlookers were treated to a spectacular show set against the Australian landmark, a taste of what to expect from the three-week Vivid festival that the spectacle was helping to launch.
The famous 'sails' of the Opera House, themselves a daring architectural vision in 1973 by Joern Utzon, were covered in stunning projections of colours and organic shapes, gradually morphing into an shifting painting of light.
Running for the next 20 nights, the light show is part of Smart Light Sydney's 'The Light Walk' - with 25 light-based artworks by local and international artists - and one part of the Luminous event, the cornerstone of the Vivid festival. Former Roxy Music keyboardist and pioneer of ambient music, Eno was commissioned by Events NSW to curate the inaugural event, which will bring emerging and established artists together to explore "music, light and ideas".
