Afrikaner South African ‘refugees’ arrive in Washington
A Maryland man speaks to a reporter while waiting in the arrivals area for White South African ‘refugees’ to arrive at Washington Dulles International Airport, in Dulles, VA, on May 12, 2025. The Trump administration chartered a plane to transport the 49 Afrikaners, who claim to be victims of racial discrimination, while barring entry to other, non-white refugees. The National Party, the main Afrikaner political party, instituted and perpetuated the nation’s apartheid system for more than 40 years. (Photo by Allison Bailey/NurPhoto) -

A one-legged robot has been developed to mimic the way squirrels leap between tree branches.
And it could be big help with solar system exploration.
The device, named Salto, can spring from a perch and stick the landing on replica branch very first attempt just like the acrobatic tree-dwelling mammals
The one-legged bot was already able to jump to a height of over a meter before being given its new skill.
The team behind it from the University of California Berkeley first did extensive research on how squirrels jump with a biomechanical analysis.
The research team found, based on high-speed video and sensor measurements, that when squirrels land after a leap, they basically do a handstand on the branch.
This is done by directing the force of landing through their shoulder joint so as to stress the joint as little as possible.
Using pads on their feet, they then grasp the branch and twist to overcome whatever excess torque threatens to send them over or under the branch.
The bot was already equipped with a motorised flywheel to help it balance.
The team were able to reverse this motor when Salto landed.
The members also added adjustable leg forces to help compensate for over- or under-shooting on landing to complement the flywheel's effect.
OPS: Researchers studied the bio mechanics of a leaping squirrel to add it to Salto's abilities
