Long-tailed weasel versus Columbia Ground Squirrel, Mt Spokane, Washington State, America - 23 Aug 2014
Wildlife photographer Christine Haines captured this dusty scrap between two critters.
She observed a weasel launching an attack on an unsuspecting squirrel - resulting in an energetic tussle for survival.
Christine explains: "I was walking along one of the trails on Mt Spokane located in eastern Washington state when I heard this commotion. It was a long-tailed weasel trying to kill this Columbia Ground Squirrel. I tried to walk around them fighting to get better lighting but I was spotted and the weasel took off. Fortunately the Squirrel will live another day. The weasel kills other animals for food. Their slender body allows them to slip into an animal's burrow to find them. It smashes the prey's skull with its sharp teeth and drinks the blood. The weasel attacked the squirrel from behind its head. This is the first time I have witnessed this attack."

Beautiful travel photos taken in darkness, worldwide
This spectacular series in fact began many years ago - when an artist's long working hours led him to go shooting photos at night.
These selected dimly lit shots from across the world prove that a lack of sunlight is certainly not always a bad thing. So, don't despair in these gloomy wintry days.
