The first purpose-built robot taxi assembly facility in the USA has opened — to produce driverless transport for short city goriness.
The Jeff Bezos Amazon owned Zoox four passenger robotaxi as it is known, has opened in San Francisco.
The facility will accelerate the planned growth and robotaxi services across multiple US cities, starting with Las Vegas, followed by San Francisco.
Additional locations such as Austin and Miami are expected to follow in the next few years.
It is Zoot’s second vehicle production facility in San Francisco but the first built from the ground up for producing its vehicles.
The facility spans 20,438 square meters, equivalent to three and a half American football fields.
The other assembly facility has evolved into a dedicated facility for the Zoox retrofitted testing fleet and for sensor pod configuration.
The Zoox plant has the capacity to assemble more than 10,000 robotaxis a year.
A spokesperson said: “The number of Zoox robotaxis we produce will grow and scale to match the demand of our commercial service as needed.”
