Spiral pattern contact lens can focus near and far

Researchers have developed a spiral-patterned contact lens that can be used for both long and short sighted vision in a single pair.
The lens maintains clear focus at different distances in varying light conditions.
The lens , known as a “diopter”, has a unique spiral design that causes light to spin, like water going down a drain.
This phenomenon, known as an optical vortex, creates multiple clear focus points, which allow the lens to provide clear focus at different distances.
It works much like progressive lenses used for vision correction but without the distortions typically seen with those lenses.
It could help advance contact lens technologies, implants for cataracts and miniaturised imaging systems.
Researchers created the lens by using advanced digital machining to mould the unique spiral design with high precision.
They then validated the lens by using it to image a digital ‘E,’ much like those used on an optometrist's light-up board.
The authors observed that the image quality remained satisfactory regardless of the aperture size used.

A pattern-changing robotic cuttlefish has given a new perspective on the strange species — by interacting with real ones.
The mechanical spy is one of the most sophisticated bots ever made.
It features in an episode of a BBC TV series called Spy in the Ocean.
Its integrated screen can replicate the changing patterns of real cuttlefish.
The species uses its skin as a communication tool.
When the so-called Spy Cuttlefish shows the patterns of a male it is treated with hostility and rivalry.
But when it switches to the patterns of a female it becomes an object of desire among the males.
In the programme Spy Cuttlefish gains an insight into what both male and female cuttlefish really feel.
Its back conceals a screen that can replay the patterns expressed by the cuttlefish.
The skin of the real cuttlefish has thousands of pigment cells linked to its brain that expand and contract.
They are known as chromatophores and show what’s on its mind.
The robot’s screen responds in kind.

OPS: A real male cuttlefish in aggresive mood approaches the robot from the side after being tricked into thinking it is a rival male. Approaching this way helps it avoid sharp teeth

The paddy field workers in the dramatic scenery in Indonesia by Rahmad Himawan
These paddy field workers get to work in the fields in front of a dramatic mountainside and moody skies. The wonderful scenery of Bengkulu, Indonesia, offered up its sites both on the ground and by air with use of a drone.
Rahmad Himawan, 29, said, "This photo of the natural beauty is one of the most beautiful views in Bengkulu, Indonesia. The agricultural scenery in front of the Barisan mountains in Sumatra, Indonesia, is a wonderful sight. These are indigenous people who live in the Kemumu village area of North Bengkulu. More than 80% of the population work as farmers, with one of these areas the rice fields. People are grouped together, with each farm having around 10-20 members. The owner of the agricultural land will hire this work force to tend to the crops with each member having varying wages, through a profit-sharing system in place, depending on that year's sales of sacks of rice. The planting of the rice is taking place all year round and can be done three to four times between harvests."
"The sky in this mountainous area of the Barisan Mountains has many dramatic moments, with the Barisan Mountains the cause of some of the weather conditions. I often get dramatic moments, mainly in the morning or evening sun, and can see rainbows, thunderstorms and foggy weather which all add to the dramatic atmosphere." (FOTO: DUKAS/SOLENT NEWS)
