Rees-Mogg's neighbours fail to share 'delight' at back garden fracking.
The village of West Harptree in Somerset, home to the business secretary, Jacob Rees-Mogg.

Few in Somerset MP's constituency share his enthusiasm but some do agree with need for 'unpopular measures'

Residents who live near Rees-Mogg's constituency home, the Grade II listed red sandstone mansion Gournay Court in the village of West Harptree, were digesting their MP's claim at the Tory party conference that he would be "delighted" if his garden was fracked.

Country is hoping a new North Sea terminal can supply 8% of its gas usage as war in Ukraine upends energy policy.

Wilhelmshaven is one of five floating LNG terminals Germany is rushing to build by the end of the year, creating infrastructure that a study in July by the Fraunhofer Institute argued would be vital to avoid cold homes and closed factories this winter not just in Germany but across all of Europe as Vladimir Putin turns off the tap.

Sizewell C: government restarts talks over £20bn nuclear power station. Move comes alongside energy white paper, which aims to cut UK’s carbon emissions.
Sizewell Nuclear Power station in Suffolk viewed across the Minsmere RSPB reserve. The government will restart talks with EDF on its plan to build a nuclear reactor at Sizewell C in Suffolk, and may take a direct financial stake in its construction. The latest round of negotiations over the £20bn nuclear reactor will focus on whether EDF can prove that it has learned lessons from the Hinkley Point nuclear project, and that a successor plant would offer the public value for money. The UK government said it was considering a new deal to help the French state-owned energy company finance Sizewell, which may include taking a direct stake in the project and making taxpayers liable for any cost overruns. A statement from the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy said it would consider a greater role in the project provided there was “clear value for money for consumers and taxpayers”. The decision to restart formal negotiations comes after a hiatus in talks that have been dogged by concerns over cost, and the involvement of China General Nuclear Power (CGN), which holds a 20% stake in the project.© Tom Pilston / eyevine

Yorkshire village faces petrochemical giant in anti-fracking fight. Ineos, owned by UK’s richest man, wants to overturn ban on well next to sheltered housing.
A petrochemical company owned by Britain’s richest man is attempting to overrule a Yorkshire council to drill a shale gas well next to a sheltered housing development. Residents in Woodsetts, Rotherham, have crowdfunded £10,000 to pay a lawyer to help them oppose the application by Ineos to carry out test core drilling on a field just outside the village.

Chernobyl, a place replete with horrific memories in northern Ukraine, close to Belarus, is now open to tourists, almost 30 years to the date after a nuclear power plant there exploded. It was the worst nuclear accident in human history. A large tract of land around the plant was designated a forbidden zone and ordinary people were completely prohibited from entering after the disaster occurred on April 26, 1986. The accident released more than 8 tons of radioactive leaks, directly contaminated an area of over 60,000 square kilometers and exposed some 3.2 million people to dangerous levels of radiation.
