65-year-old June Blythe, of Taverham in Norfolk, lost the two senses when she developed chronic rhinosinusitis in 1975.
Amazingly, this didn't stop the keen cook from winning prizes for her cooking or from training and working as an aromatherapist.
Over the years June underwent three operations in an attempt to remove growths from her nasal passages, but her sense of smell and taste remained lost.
But now, after an extensive operation to clear polyps from her sinus cavities, she can smell and taste once again.
June underwent the procedure at Britain's only NHS Smell and Taste Clinic at the James Paget University Hospital.
She discovered it had been a success ten days later while making lemon and sultana scones and realising she could smell the lemon.

The fabulous and fashionable were out in force last night for the New York premiere of new film 'Valentino: The Last Emperor'. The documentary celebrates recently retired fashion designer Valentino's 45 years in the business. Directed by Matt Tyrnauer, Special Correspondent for Vanity Fair magazine, 'Valentino: The Last Emperor' follows the Italian designer's last two years at the helm of the fashion house he created. At the heart of the film is the unique relationship between Valentino and his business partner and companion of 50 years, Giancarlo Giammetti. Shot between 2005 and 2007, the filmmakers shot over 250 hours of footage and had exclusive, unprecedented access to Valentino and his entourage. Proving that Valentino has lost none of his allure, a host of glamorous women turned up for the film's New York premiere, including Gwyneth Paltrow, Anne Hathaway, Madonna, Claire Danes, Helena Christensen and Agyness Deyn.
