Bald 'Skinny' Pigs Are The Latest Pet Craze
Guinea pigs that have no fur are the latest pet craze sweeping across Britain.
The wrinkly skinny pigs, which are selling for GBP 120 each, are almost completely bald and have to live inside with their owners during the winter to keep warm.
The cute creatures, which need suncream in the summer, do not occur in the wild and were a genetic mutation created in The Institute Armand Frappier lab in Montreal in Canada in 1978.
But their lack of hair has now made them hugely popular with allergy sufferers and an increasing number of Brits are buying the coat-free guinea pigs as family pets.
"I've always been fascinated by unusual pets and when I saw my first skinny pig I knew I had to have one," said Karen Brown, who looks after more than 40 skinny pigs in her home and is the leading breeder in the UK.
"I bought a lilac and white sow called 'Peanut', and so it all began. I love the fact they live indoors with me and they have become like part of the family.
"They are cheeky, inquisitive, gentle and friendly, so they are good fun and make great pets."
Skinny pigs have tiny tufts of hair on their noses and feet, but otherwise they are completely naked from birth, with their plump bodies and stumpy legs on show.
They come in a variety of skin colours, including albino, chocolate, silver, cinnamon, lilac, white, golden and even Dalmatian - which are white with black spots.
"I love the Dalmatian markings on any guinea pig and find it particularly striking in the hairless," added Karen.
"My favourite colour is chocolate. They are the most popular alongside well marked darker Dalmatians."
Unlike traditional guinea pigs, skinnies cannot live outside as they would never survive the cold and have to be kept warm in a heated home.
On warm sunny days they ...

Hoodies for dogs becomes the latest pet fashion craze, Southampton, Hampshire, Britain - 22 Nov 2009

HOODIES FOR HOUNDS
Dog owners are now dressing their pets in a range of trendy hoodies launched by a speciality pooch clothing company.
Fur-trimmed parkas, puffer jackets and fleecy body warmers are all made to fit a variety of dogs.
Schoolgirls Isabel and Jasmine Dicks love to dress their pet Chihuahuas Angel and Brick in the range of little coats.
Isabel, 13, and Jasmine, 11, choose their doggy outfits every day - and even get busy on the sewing machine to make sure the clothes fit just right.
The sisters save up their pocket money to buy the new clothes - ranging in price from GBP 5 to GBP 40 - from website DoggieStyleStore.com.
They have also bought a pink coat with black fur trim from store Pets at Home.
While out for walks near their home in Southampton, Hants, the nine month old dogs turn heads wherever they go.
The pair of short-haired Chihuahuas, the world's smallest breed of dog, weighed just a pound each when they became part of the family at just eight weeks old.
Isabel fell in love with Chihuahuas when she spotted one in a pet shop close to where they live and nagged parents Gina Penn and Graham Dicks to get them.
She said: "I just wanted one straight away and I kept going on at Mum until she let me."
Now the girls get puzzled looks when they walk along with their dogs dressed in the bizarre selection of clothes, which makes dad Graham, a crematorium technician, feel distinctly uncomfortable.
He said: "I felt I should be wearing a Village People's outfit to match. But they're cracking little dogs. They've really grown on me."
Gina said: "They are tiny dogs with very little body fat so it is recommended that they wear coats in the winter.
"The girls love dressing them. Izzy particularly loves nice clothes and I think this is an extension of that and her love ...
