Anorexia Almost Killed Me But Now I'm Back On Track
Hard at work training for the London marathon, Harriet Smith looks the picture of health.

However, not so long ago the 26-year-old was given just weeks to live after anorexia caused her weight to plummet.

At the height of her illness, 5ft 8ins Harriet weighed just five stone, had a BMI of 10 and ate one apple every few days.

Now, after a 12 year battle to overcome the condition the qualified nurse weighs a healthy 9st 7lb.

Harriet's slide into anorexia began when she was 14 and decided to eat more healthily.

However, this quickly morphed into an obsession with food that saw her lose four stone in the space of a few years.

The extreme weight loss saw her suffer constant headaches, caused her periods to stop and made a fine layer of hair grow on her body.

Despite the symptoms Harriet refused to accept she had a problem - even when doctors warned she was so thin her heart could stop.

Eventually, in July 2005 she was sectioned under the Mental Health Act and was sent to a specialist eating disorder unit for 12 months.

Here she was kept under strict surveillance and thanks to the regime - alongside pleas from her family - she began to put on weight.

Today, she credits the support she received from mum Joanne, 63, dad Graeme, 55, and brothers Tom, 28, and Edward, 21 for her recovery.

And while running was once a way to burn calories and lose weight, it is now something she does simply for the fun of it.

Harriet is now in training for the London Marathon, which she plans to run in aid of the People's Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA).

She also hopes her remarkable story will act as a message of hope other sufferers of anorexia.
