Kookie the kookaburra and the young Madagascar Teal duckling
Duckling befriends young kookaburra, Seaview Wildlife Encounter, Ryde, Isle of Wight, Britain - 08 Aug 2010
In the wild, the 6-week-old Kookaburra, called Kookie, would not have thought twice about eating his companion for lunch.

But the pair seem to have developed an unusual bond - after both being orphaned at birth.

Kookie had to be saved by staff at the Seaview Wildlife Encounter, near Ryde on the Isle of Wight, after his parents went crazy and killed their other two offspring.

And the rare 2-day-old Madagascar Teal duckling was rescued from one of the park's aviaries because he was too small to defend himself against larger birds.

Initially the pair were kept separate but staff had concerns for the tiny duckling, who was obviously lonely and missing his mum.

So their keepers cautiously introduced the pair.

To their amazement the duckling instantly cuddled up under the Kookaburra's protective wing and Kookie didn't seem to mind playing the caring parent.

While they are hopeful the pair will remain friends for life, staff at the wildlife park admit they may have to separate them in future.

THE BABY ELEPHANT THAT HAS BEEN ADOPTED BY A SHEEP

When baby elephant Themba was orphaned and then abandoned by his herd of it looked as if he would have no chance of survival.

At just six months old, the equivalent in age as a human baby, the little elephant was vulnerable, unable to feed himself and faced certain death from starvation, or, worse, a lion attack.

But unbeknown to him Themba's struggle was being watched by a team of vets at the Sanbona Wildlife Reserve in the Western Cape of South Africa, who made the difficult decision to rescue him.

Alone and afraid, it was still touch and go for the helpless pacaderm without the much-needed love and company of the herd because vets feared his weakened state could send him into a dangerous shock at any time.

So in stepped Albert, the amazing sheep who thinks he's an elephant; Albert has now struck up a remarkable friendship that's helping little Themba find his way back from the brink.

Filmmaker and now full-time elephant mum Lyndal Davies is part of the team working with the unlikely bedfellows.

She said: "When we first put Themba and Albert in together all hell broke loose.

"Themba made a dash for the sheep and chased him around his watering hole.

"Albert quickly high tailed it to the other end of the enclosure where we had built a fenced-in safe haven for him.

"That's where Albert stayed for the first 12 hours.

"Themba was very curious and kept coming up and sticking his trunk through the poles, touching Albert on his woolly back and having a good sniff.

"The next morning Albert was clearly bored and started ventur...

Unlikely friendship between a sheep and an orphaned baby elephant, Shamwari Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, Eastern Cape, South Africa - Nov 2008

A dog and a duck have struck up an unlikely friendship - behind the bar of a pub called the Green Dragon. The unlikely story began when landlord Grant Adlam saved several eggs from a duck's nest which had been attacked by crows. The mother had abandoned the nest so Mr Adlam incubated the eggs in his airing cupboard, turning them every day. 'Two weeks after I saved the eggs, I heard a squeaking noise coming from the cupboard, and when I opened it Daffy was sitting on the floor' he said. Mr Adlam, landlord of the Green Dragon pub in Cambridge asked for advice from the Wildlife Society, which advised him on how to care for Daffy. Daffy, now eight weeks old, has been a huge hit with visitors to the pub as well as Mr Adlam's pet dog, west highland terrier Jock. Jock, who Mr Adlam describes as incredibly friendly and loving, has become very protective of the young bird. Mr Adlam said: 'They get on like a house on fire. Jock is there waiting for her first thing every morning when I go to let her out'. And it seems Jock's feelings are reciprocated - Jock and Daffy in the beer garden of the pub

Farmer Carol McGuire has drafted in llamas as unlikely security guards to protect her sheep from foxes. After sheepdogs proved useless she desperately needed some other method to keep her flock safe, and since investing in the exotic animals, who fend off predators by spitting, she hasn't lost any sheep. Carol said: 'Getting in llamas was the best thing I've ever done. The sheepdogs kept getting injured and they didn't bond with my sheep at all. But the llamas work because they think of the sheep as one of their own herd. They take extra special care of them'
