Butterflies Cluster to Keep Warm
These fascinating images show thousands of Monarch Butterflies clustered together in order to conserve heat during the winter months.
Every year over 25,000 Monarch Butterflies huddle together on the pine and eucalyptus trees of Monarch Grove Sanctuary in Pacific Grove, California.
Arriving in October it is thought the butterflies come from as far north as Canada, triggered by the decreasing daylight and freezing temperatures the Monarchs begin flying south towards the overwintering grounds sometimes up to 2,000 miles away.
After reaching their destination the Monarchs cluster in large masses to conserve heat and energy as their flight muscles do not function well unless the temperature is above 55 degrees.
Wildlife photographer Michael Yang visited the Monarch Grove Sanctuary on Boxing Day to witness the unique migration.
He said: "When I was there the temperature was in the mid 50's equivalent to ten degrees Celsius, which meant the majority of the Monarch Butterflies were in the cluster. However, it is not uncommon to see stray butterflies fluttering about."
During warmer days Monarchs will look for food sources such as nectar but always return to the clusters at night.
This migration is so unique because migrating species such as birds sand whales, the same individuals have travelled the migration route year after year however, migrating Monarchs have never been to their destination before because several generations of Monarchs would have lived and died since last year's butterfly migration.
A female Monarch Butterfly has approximately six weeks to seek out nectar, mate and lay eggs before she dies.

Night Heron Snatches Duckling For Dinner
These shocking images show nature at its worst.
A night heron is pictured taking off with a duckling that has swum too far away from its mother.
As the heron flies off with his dinner, eye contact is made between the mother duck and her duckling who is struggling to get away.
Wildlife photographer Michael Yang was taking his wife out to spot some cute wildlife at Radio Road in California to cheer her up after being ill for a few days.
He said: "We were hoping to find some baby avocets, stilts, or ducklings and were both really happy to see several families of ducklings following their mothers around the pond.
"As we were watching the ducklings a night heron flew in, which are not uncommon in the area but what we did not expect to see was the night heron land near a duckling that had wandered a little too far from its mother and snatch it from the water."
The duckling tried to dive under water to escape the night heron; unfortunately it didn't get deep enough and the heron pulled it out of the water, grabbing the duckling by a foot.
It took off with its dinner all the while the duckling was being flung about like a rag doll in the heron's beak.
Michael said: "At some point in all this my wife had turned away and started sobbing. It didn't help that, through all this, I was taking pictures of the "event" and not comforting her instead."

A disused railway track looks set to become one of the prettiest parks in New York.
The High Line in west Chelsea is being converted into a park including floating ponds, sundecks and lookout spots over the Hudson River and Manhattan.
The elevated former industrial line had become decrepit and overgrown but thanks to the support of wealthy benefactors and several famous names it is undergoing a transformation into an amazing green space.
With the first phase set to open to the public later this month (June), the park should span 22 blocks once it's all open in 2010.
Stretching 1.45 miles, up to 30ft high and only 60ft wide, the line runs along Manhattan's West Side, from Gansevoort Street, in the Meatpacking District, through Chelsea to 34th Street.
Having last carried freight in 1980, it was saved from demolition by former mayor Michael Bloomberg and has seen high-profile support from the likes of Donna Karan, Ralph Lauren, Susan Sarandon, Harvey Weinstein and Jerry Seinfeld.

MAYAN MYSTICISM IN CHIAPAS
Visitors to the Mexican state of Chiapas are guaranteed a trip drenched in Mayan mysticism, as well as unfettered access to lovely hotels, colonial towns and indigenous cultures.
The Pacific Coast state also benefits from an abundance of lush green fields, forests and jungles, fresh air, unique flora and fauna and rare species.
Many ethnic groups live in Chiapas and each has kept their traditions, languages and folklore alive. Their economy is based on cultivation - corn, beans, squash, potatoes, vegetables, pears, tomatoes and other plants - and raising animals such as pigs and poultry. And the colourful costumes of each group are just as varied as the countryside that surrounds them.
Due to this ethnic tradition Chiapas is also famous for its handcrafts. The Tojolabals make various articles in wood and clay; the Lacandons produce reed flutes, hammocks, nets, leather bags, polished and decorated gourds, clay dolls and necklaces of seeds; while the Zoques are masters at weaving baskets and making toys.
Surrounded by dozens of traditional Tzotzil and Tzeltal villages, the city of San Cristobal de Las Casas is at the heart of one of the most deeply rooted indigenous areas in Mexico. Set in a gorgeous highland valley, the colonial city has been a popular travelers' destination for decades. This makes it both an excellent base for local and regional exploration and a place where ancient customs coexist with modern luxuries. Many people who visit Chiapas stay in the town and use it as a base-camp to explore the surrounding area.
