Nepal People's Movement
Protestors run after bullets were fired by the APF police at the rally organized by Madhesi Janadhikar Forum at Ghantaghar, Birgunj (250 km. south of Kathmandu) on Sunday, Feb. 4, 2007. Bullets were fired at the protesters by the armed police force, injuring 22 people. Seventeen have already lost their lives and thousands of people are being injured from more than two weeks of strikes and curfews in major parts of the Terai region of Nepal. Madhesi Janaadhikar Forum (Madhesi People's Rights Forum) or MJF or MPRF, led by former Maoist leader Upendra Yadav, has led the movement. The key demands of the MJF were to have a federal government structure with autonomy and a proportional election system based on density of caste and ethnicity. The government has quickly taken steps to subdue unrest in the Terai region. Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala asked Mahanta Thakur, coordinator of a newly formed team, to start talks with the Madhesi groups as soon as possible. However, leaders of the Madheshi Janaadhikar Forum have demanded the early resignation of Home Minister Krishna Prasad Sitaula from the cabinet to make an appropriate environment for talks. Due to the strike, hundreds of passengers have been abandoned along the roads without food, clothing and shelter. Markets and shops have been vandalized and closed. Because of this, there is a lack of consumer goods and daily necessities, and prices have soared.
