A heavyweight phone case is hoping to help cure people of their smartphone addictions — by making the device too heavy to hold for long periods.
The 6-Pound Phone Case, which tips the metric scales at 2.72 KG, is made from solid stainless steel.
It was inspired by the brick like portable phones of the 80s when it was a tool, not a pocket sized computer.
The US team behind it, from feel-good website Matter Neuroscience based in California, said the idea began as a joke but now the steel case is being offered for sale at $210 USD / €180 Euros.
A spokesman said: “It’s heavy.
“Your hands and arms physically get tired while using it. That fatigue reminds you to put the phone down.
“ It’s a physical feedback loop against overuse, and it will tone your muscles.”
It’s also inconvenient because the case won’t fit in a pocket so it has to. Be carried in a bag like a laptop, or left in another room.
The case consists of two separate steel pieces that need to be screwed onto a phone with an Allen key making the desire to remove it annoying enough to break the impulse.

It can also be frozen before use to keep icy drinks cool. The tankard was inspired by dock side capstans that are used to coil ropes to keep ships moored. It also has a dovetail jointed brass handle and a bow shackle used on real capstans to pass rope through. The maker, US-based Ocean Brass, specialises in making ship-inspired objects. For those who feel the tankard, which holds 590 ml of liquid, is too big to handle, there is a smaller 8 lbs / 3.6 kg version big enough to hold just over 473 ml. Both are available from the company based in Boston, Massachusetts, from its website and Kickstarter.
