Lord of the Rings filmmaker Sir Peter Jackson is joining forces with a company that brought back long extinct dire wolves — to resurrect a giant wingless bird.
New Zealand born Jackson and Texas-based Colossal Biosciences want to bring back the country’s towering Moa which could grow up to 3.6 metres tall.
The initiative will also be collaborating with the native Maori Ngai Tahu Research Centre.
The aim is to integrate traditional Maori knowledge with advanced genetic engineering to support ecological restoration and revolutionary conservation tools.
Colossal Biosciences has committed a large investment to New Zealand which is a biodiversity hotspot due to its isolation and natural history.
It has already begun sequencing and rebuilding the genomes for what were nine moa species.
Moa were flightless birds endemic to New Zealand that went extinct approximately 600 years ago, approximately two centuries after Polynesian settlement.
They consisted of nine distinct species and ranged from turkey-sized to the South Island Giant Moa which stood up to 3.6 meters tall and weighed approximately 230 kilograms.
As large herbivores, moa played crucial ecological roles in New Zealand's forests and grasslands for millions of years.
