MONGOLIA / Choibalsan / 2008. Soviet air base building constructed 1982, abandoned after the collapse of the USSR. The slogan reads: Glory to Communist Party of Soviet Union. After 1955 when Khruschev condemned the 'excesses'of Stalin's Empire style, Soviet architecture becamecharacterised by geometrical austerity. Military buildings, faced typically with white silicate bricks, werebuilt as economically as possible using simple standarddesigns. Choibalsan is the capital city of Dornodprovince, situated along the north bank of the KherlinRiver, 650 km east of the capital Ulaanbaatar.
Eric Lusito - Traces of the Soviet Empire
FULL COPY: http://www.rexfeatures.com/nanolink/p8ug
These haunting photographs show the remnants of the once all-powerful Soviet empire.
They are the work of Eric Lusito, who spent six years travelling throughout the former Soviet world from East Germany to Mongolia, from Poland to Kazakhstan to seek out remains of the military installations that embodied the ambition and the might of the USSR.
Describing himself as working like an archaeologist, the French photographer says his project "Traces of the Soviet Empire" is a photographic record of the land and architecture - haunted by the symbols and history of a once powerful Empire.
The on-going project takes the form of three series: exteriors, interiors, and found photographs "images from another time, another space and another world".
What he found was colourful propaganda wall art, faded frescos of Lenin, discarded gas masks, and huge monuments, including those in the shapes of a soldier and a sword.

Thrill-seeking pensioner Gwyneth Haslock is Britain's ultimate silver surfer. Adrenaline junkie Gwyneth, 69, is still catching waves - sixty years after becoming the country's first competitive female surfer. Gwyneth hits the surf on beaches near her home in Truro, Cornwall, three times a week. The retired council clerk, who has never married, said: "In terms of stand-up surfing I think I am the oldest woman in the country still doing it. "Since I packed up work I have more time on my hands and go out on the board three times a week in winter and summer. "I look in the internet to see what the surf is like and get out on the ocean wave as often as possible. "Surfing keeps me fit in, not only in body but also in mind and I will keep going until my health deteriorates".

Britain's first female surfer who began hitting the waves more than six decades ago is still surfing - despite being 68. Pensioner Gwyn Haslock began surfing in the 1950's and was forced to compete against men as there were no females competitions at the time. She continued to surf on a regular basis and racked up several British titles in the sixties and seventies. A Wardrobe Full Of Grace
An icon of the 20th century, Grace Kelly is widely considered to be one of the world's most famous style icons.
Epitomising the glamour of Hollywood and the allure of European royalty, her elegant style has been much admired and copied.
As such there have been numerous exhibitions paying homage to the actress and princess that have toured the world
However, when not on tour the clothes from both her Hollywood and Monaco days can be found in a fluorescent-lit basement room in the Royal Palace in Monte-Carlo.
Here rack upon rack of colourful of clothes - from haute couture to homemade designs - are kept in a special dehumidified and temperature chilled room.
Shoes, hats, gloves and bags are wrapped in tissue and everything is carefully labelled with its designer, the year of origin and the major occasions upon which it was worn.
Items in the collection include a grey chiffon dress worn by Kelly in the 1956 film 'High Society', a Morabito needle point bag taken to the Oscars in 1955 and a tulle evening dress worn to the 1972 Cannes Film Festival.
The collection is carefully preserved by Maryel Girardin, Kelly's former palace wardrobe mistress.
Maryel worked with Kelly for 25 years - acting as her embroiderer, linen supervisor and seamstress.
Following Kelly's death in 1982 it was Maryel who, on the orders of Kelly's husband Prince Rainier, carefully packed away all of the princesses' clothes.
As well as presiding over the Palace collection, Maryel now helps other curators assemble and display exhibitions dedicated to Kelly's style.
