Investitures at Buckingham Palace, London, Britain - 18 Feb 2009
Sir Terry Pratchett has suggested that the multimillion-pound bonuses which would have been paid to Royal Bank of Scotland staff could instead be spent helping to treat dementia patients. The author, who is best known for his hugely popular Discworld series of novels, made the comments after receiving a knighthood from the Queen. The 60-year-old, who has sold more than 55 million books worldwide, announced last year that he has early onset Alzheimer's - a rare form of the disease. Dressed in a top hat and morning suit and commenting after the ceremony at Buckingham Palace the writer said: "Everybody thinks the Government should be doing more about everything but just think how many of the bonuses which are quite rightly being dragged off certain people, just think to what good causes they could be put - wouldn't that be a lovely thought?"

Sir Terry Pratchett with the sword he forged from his own iron ore, near Salisbury, Wiltshire, Britain - 18 Sep 2010
It may sound like something from one of his books but a sword made out of a meteorite is no fantasy for Terry Pratchett. The fantasy writer, creator of the phenomenally successful Discworld series, decided that he needed a suitable sword after being knighted by the Queen last year. Wanting to make the sword wholly his own the newly titled 'Sir' set out to collect, smelt and mould his very own weapon. First of all he dug up his own iron ore which he then smelted in the grounds of his house, using a makeshift kiln fuelled by sheep manure and constructed from clay and hay. According to the 62-year-old author, who suffers from Alzheimer's disease, he also threw in several pieces of meteorites, or "thunderbolt iron". What followed was days of hammering the metal into bars that Sir Terry took to the local blacksmith to be shaped it into his very own heavenly blade, which was finished off with silverwork.

Terry Pratchett 'Discworld' inspired street names in Wincanton, Somerset, Britain - 05 Apr 2009
Legendary author Sir Terry Pratchett visited the Somerset town of Wincanton to unveil Discworld-inspired road names to be used at George Wimpey's new Kingwell Rise development. Hundreds of Discworld fans, many in costume, descended on Wincanton's High Street to see the author announce the names. The housebuilder Wimpey had previously asked local residents to vote for their favourite road name from a shortlist of 14 suggested by Sir Terry. Sir Terry Pratchett said: "I think it's a lovely idea, even though it makes my head spin to think of the books becoming a little closer to reality. And they are nice names, even though I say it myself. Personally, I'd pay good money to live somewhere called Treacle Mine Road!" Wincanton already has strong ties with Discworld, officially twinning in 2002 with the fictional city of Ankh-Morpork from the novels and becoming the first UK town to link with a place that doesn't actually exist.
