The 24th and current President of Liberia; Ellen Johnson Sirleaf - Awarded The 2011 Nobel Peace Prize
President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf in her offices in Monrovia.

Sirleaf was awarded the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize, jointly with Leymah Gbowee of Liberia and Tawakel Karman of Yemen. The women were recognized "for their non-violent struggle for the safety of women and for womenÕs rights to full participation in peace-building work." However, this has generated controversy in Liberia as it has been interpreted by Sirleaf's political critics as having granted her an "unfair advantage" immediately before the upcoming Liberian Presidential election, which is scheduled to occur on October 11, 2011.
