August 24, 2017 - Space - Image Release Today. It was spring in the Northern hemisphere when this image was taken by the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. Over the winter, snow and ice have inexorably covered the dunes. Unlike on Earth, this snow and ice is carbon dioxide, better known to us as dry ice. When the sun starts shining on it in the spring, the ice on the smooth surface of the dune cracks and escaping gas carries dark sand out from the dune below, often creating beautiful patterns. On the rough surface between the dunes, frost is trapped behind small sheltered ridges. Date: May 21, 2017, at 13:21 local Mars time (FOTO: DUKAS/ZUMA)

A lucky photographer found himself in exactly the right place at the right time to capture the perfect picture of this week's once-in-a-lifetime solar eclipse. Student Matt Harrington was able to capture the remarkable natural phenomenon of the first total solar eclipse to unfold from coast to coast in the USA in nearly a century.

Millions of Americans, including President Donald Trump, donned protective eyewear and looked to the skies on Monday in order to glimpse the rare event as the moon passed between Earth and the sun. Mr Harrington, who studies computer science at Francis Marion University in South Carolina, used a long-focus lens with an extender to get the best possible shot. SEE OUR COPY FOR DETAILS.

    Antarctic Warm Up

Researchers record hottest ever reading on Earth's coldest continent where temperatures usually range between 14F and -76F. Temperatures in Antarctica have reached an unprecedented 63.5F, the U.N. weather agency has announced, March 2017. Over the past 50 years, the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula has been one of the most rapidly warming parts of the planet, with its glaciers in accelerated retreat in the last 12 years. Air temperature increases of 3 degrees in the Antarctic Peninsula, which is 5 times the mean rate of global warming as reported by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change IPCC. This change can also be noted in the Southern Ocean which is warming more rapidly than the global ocean as a whole. Antarctica’s immense ice sheet is up to 4.8km thick and contains 90% of the world’s fresh water, enough to raise sea level by around 60 meters were it all to melt. The warming of the Peninsula has reshaped the physical and living environment of the region. The distribution of penguin colonies has changed as the sea ice conditions alter and on land has resulted in increased colonization by plants. A long-term decline in the abundance of Antarctic krill may be associated with reduced sea ice. Many glaciers have retreated and ice shelves that formerly fringed the Peninsula have retreated in recent years, some have collapsed completely. Antarctic species are dramatically impacted, Adélie penguin populations have been declining in recent years due to reductions in krill populations. Emperor penguins are highly vulnerable and are predicted to suffer as the world's average temperature increases. Climate change in Antarctica will thus have dramatic effects both globally and locally.

August 20, 2017 - Orange City, Florida, U.S. - DOUGLAS R. CLIFFORD | Times.Laura Ottenberg, 21, of Clearwater, prepares for a freedive while exploring Blue Spring State Park west of Orange City on Thursday (8/10/17). The park is a popular tourist destination; providing a destination for canoeing, SCUBA diving, kayaking, snorkeling and freediving. Blue Spring is the largest spring on the St. Johns River and discharges around 165 million gallons of water per day through a vertical shaft that angles into a room at a depth of 80 to 90 feet, but at 120 to 125 feet, the cave constricts and creates a strong flow, preventing further safe diver access. Freediving is allowed to a depth of 60 feet in the shaft. Freediving is a form of underwater diving that relies on divers' ability to hold their breath until resurfacing rather than on the use of a breathing apparatus such as scuba gear. The diving technique is used for fishing, photography, synchronized swimming, underwater sports and snorkeling. There is also the sport of competitive freediving where participants attempt to attain great depths, times, or distances on a single breath (FOTO: DUKAS/ZUMA)
